It is often said that success happens when opportunity meets preparation. Though success differs from one person to another it is clear that one can look at opportunities and see what success is and what it isn’t. We can try to explain away others success but the key is that for as long as we are looking at and discussing them, they are doing something right.

​The main question then becomes how to ensure we are more ready when the opportunity avails itself and whether we can create the opportunity. In my mind there are a few things that helps in being ready:

​         I.         Investing the time: It does not matter what you are working on. You need to put in an incredible amount of time to be an expert in a specific subject matter. The approximated time is 10,000 hours for someone working a normal eight hours week that is five years. Though one needs to grasp and go through the process you can put in more time and reduce your time;

​        II.         Investing in Knowledge: Knowledge is the single most significant differentiator between success and non-successful people. This does not mean an accumulation of papers, it is actual hands-on knowledge on the subject. If we don’t have knowledge about something it does not exist in our world;

​      III.         Investing in the right relationships: Associating with the right people is important. By right people, I mean people who pour into you and who you pour into in terms of growth and inspiration and are not threatened by you. It is important know the value you bring to the other person since these relationships are a give-and-take.

​      IV.         Being disciplined: The ability to do what you need to do whether you feel like it or not is what sets us apart. Occasionally, we feel like we do not want to work and have a million reasons why we shouldn’t but the beauty of how success looks like propels us.

​As we have seen being ready requires not only luck but also sacrifice. Knowing the right sacrifices to make and at what time is key. Also being curious so that when the opportunities come we know how to seize them is important. All in all, we determine our own success and so we should ensure we are putting in all the work to be ready to seize the opportunities.
