Scribbled text on a paper

Trust is believing in something or someone and it involves being sure that you shall receive and get that which you set out to.  Trust is important because it helps build and maintain businesses and other relationships, but striking the right balance of who to trust and to what extent is of utmost importance.

You may be deceived if you trust too much, but you will live in torment unless you trust enough.- Frank Crane.

When you think about it, trust starts with the small things. For example, a baby trusts that as you play with them you shall not let them fall to the floor, and no wonder when thrown in the air instead of being scared they smile at you. Also when you start a business you believe that everybody who comes to work there shall do their very best and the customer comes in because they believe the product makes sense to them.  So when you think about it life is a series of trust relationships and situations.

In the world, there are many things that help build trust and the lack of them leads to severe trust damage. To help build trust:

i)               Be completely authentic. People like and crave for honesty and they can see through if you are faking it.

ii)              Remain accountable. We live in a fluid world and things will occasionally go wrong. Coming in upfront and explaining what has gone wrong and how you intend to fix it gains more than just hiding behind the scenes.

iii)            Be completely candid with people. Many at times we might sound cruel but telling people the truth even when it hurts make them realize that you have their back.

iv)            Remain humane. People want to be heard and they would like to see that you are human enough even to make mistakes. Admitting this helps people get drawn to you and you end up creating strong relationships.

Trust is the cornerstone of the wealth creation journey because people want to do business and work with people they trust. I am one of those people who trusts easily and my philosophy has been to trust until someone has given you a reason not to. I have always believed that people are generally good and few would sit and plan something evil. In the process I have burnt my fingers, lost a lot of money and damaged lots of relationships. This week in the Wednesday Webinar I learnt from Frida that we need to trust in stages.

It is good that as human we work to be trusted because if we are trusted there are no limits to what we can achieve.

Remember It is mutual trust, even more than mutual interest that holds human associations together. H.L. Mencken
