Using Biases to Our Advantage

This week we were celebrating the International Women’s Day Themed Breaking the bias.

Bias are generally brought about by the thought that one set of people is better than others. The main question that should really be given the same opportunities are people fundamentally that different? In the world it is unfortunate that we all cannot have access to same opportunities and so despite the efforts we might never fully achieve a bias free continent.

This has been making me think what are the ways and means we can use the biases to our advantage more so borrowing from the David and Goliath story. It is good to take the assumption that in life people are fundamentally good and so will always work to help the underdog. So, what are some of the things that we must do to turn our perceived disadvantage to our most outstanding advantage:

i. Be ready to pay the price - The acceptance that life is not fair and it was never meant to be helps us come from the point of self-sympathy of why me to more like what change can I make for the people coming after me. Life doesn’t always give us what we deserve, but rather, what we demand. And so you must continue to push harder than any other person in the room.” — Wadi Ben-Hirki. It is good to accept that being a minority on a matter shall mean that you shall have to do more than others who have an outright advantage.

ii. Be ready to stand alone and practice the art of Selflessness: At times standing for what is not popular is not the best place to be at but it is good to note that if you stand for something that is worthwhile history shall judge you right. People can waste a large amount of their time trying to be accepted by people. Sometimes, God meant for you not to fit. You never know, you may hold the unique perspective that when voiced or demonstrated will change generations.”  ― Shannon L. Alder. Embracing the fact that you shall plant trees whose shade you shall not sit under is one of the key things that shall help in growing

iii. Be in the room: Many at times we have good ideas but we do not have the qualifications and the experience required to do the job. We should push to secure our position in the room and not exceptions because of our minority status. You can never fight a battle unless you are in the battle ground. It is good to always be prepared “I will prepare and some day my chance will come.” ― Abraham Lincoln

iv. Push for others: Alone one can only do as much but when you push for others you illuminate the path. Ensure you are working with the people whose says matters so that you make more headways i.e sharpening the axe with the right tools.

In her final chapter in her book Kamala Harris explains the summary of the role we need to play in alleviating the biases. Let’s look at how to use our position to make the change that we want.
